Extra innings, power outages and an inside-the-park homer? It can only mean an epic start to the 2016 World Series.

The Kansas City Royals displayed the same level of skill they did last year, beating the New York Mets 5-4 in the 14th inning. It was longest WS Game 1 in history.

It became a marathon when Alex Gordon pulled Royals first baseman Eric Hosmer off the hook for his rare error, allowing the Mets to take a 4-3 lead in the eighth.

Hosmer ended it for the Mets with a sacrifice fly, allowing shortstop Alcides Escobar to score the winning run. Escobar not only scored at the end but set a wild pace early in the night, smashing the first pitch into center field, sprinting around the bases to give Kansas a 1-0 lead. It was the first inside-the-park home run in a WS since 1929.

Just when we thought it couldn’t get any crazier, the game was delayed by six minutes after Fox Sports lost power due to a generator issue. No big deal - it was “a rare electronics failure [causing] both the primary and backup generators inside the Fox Sports production compound to lose power”.

At that point, the Royals and Mets were tied 1-1 in the bottom of the fourth. Matt Harvey stood on the mound with no one to pitch to. Oh well, perfect time for a bathroom break.

Google Fiber joined in the fun when they experienced an hour-long outage during the early innings too. Cue jokes and memes.
