Jarryd Hayne's San Francisco 49ers are keen to play an NFL pre-season game in Australia next year.

News Corp Australia reported on Sunday that NSW Premier Mike Baird and the chairman of the 49ers, John York, have held talks to hold a match at ANZ Stadium in Sydney next August.

Taking advantage of the huge spike in the NFL's popularity in Australia since Hayne's transition from rugby league to the big show, the game's cost is expected to be around $10 million, which would be funded by NSW's major events budget and ticket sales.

"It's something we'd definitely consider with the NFL," Dr York said.

"We're fully aware of the interest Jarryd Hayne has created in Sydney and Australia."

It hasn't been decided which NFL side would take on the 49ers.

ANZ Stadium hosted an American Bowl match in 1999 - between the Denver Broncos and San Diego Chargers - which drew a crowd of 73,811.
